Thunderbolt 3 cheaper docks look like they should work okay for the 13" but to get one that will do 90w or so for the 15" gets up in price very quickly it looks like. It appears none of them can do two extended monitors regardless of available ports unless you pay for thunderbolt 3. I was surprised how difficult it was.Įdit: turns out it's just a limitation of the port. I'll report back if I get this working and add a post. If you have a 4k monitor (or two) you want to hook up a more expensive thunderbolt dock is required by the looks of things unless you can live with 30HZ.

If you just want one monitor that ISN'T 4k there are several cheap dock options that should work. The one I ordered has a USB-C data out that I'm really hoping supports dp alt mode so I can use that and the HDMI port for monitors. I'm hoping I can get two monitors (QHD and FHD), audio, ethernet, power (we'll see if it's enough) and usb port for a keyboard out of it.īiggest issue I see is that because they're geared towards Macs they barely ever have two monitor outs, or if they do the second one is VGA (gross). I've ordered a generic USB-C hub from Amazon with 100W pass through and a 90W generic USB-C charger. I think HP is wrong, but there should be cheaper options regardless. Oh man.I went into a horrible research hole a couple times on this.
